Department of Surgery no. 2 was established in 1945, having as its clinical base the Surgery Department no. 1 of the Republican Clinical Hospital. The founder and the first head of the chair was Professor FM Golub, who held this position until 1952. At that time, two theses of doctor in medicine (N. Gheorghiu in 1948 and M. Dukelscaia in 1949) were supported and a thesis doctor habilitat in medicine (associate professor Natalia Ghoeorghiu in 1953).
From 1952 to 1964 the chair was led by Professor P. Rajov.
During the period 1964-1992 the head of the chair was P. Bâtcă, Emeritus of the Higher School, doctor habilitat in medicine, professor.
Since 1991, the position of head of the chair is elected V. Hotineanu, doctor habilitat in medicine, university professor, disciple of academician ASM from Russia M. Kuzin and professor P. Bâtca. Under the leadership of Professor V. T. Hotineanu were supported 30 theses of doctor of medicine and 4 theses of doctor habilitat.
The staff of the Department contributed substantially to the improvement of specialized health care. It is created the Republican Center of Septic Surgery with septic reanimation, where the patients with postoperative complications are hospitalized. New methods of surgical treatment of ulcerative disease and operative stomach disease, gall bladder cholecystectomy, fistula, strictures and iatrogenes of the extrahepatic bile duct are used, new social rehabilitation of patients with colon pathology, morbid obesity . Thyroid, thymus and adrenal gland surgery develops.
By order of the rector of September 1999, Chirurgie chair was formed. 2 (head of the department - Prof. V. Hotineanu) by merging Surgery chairs 3 and Surgery no.4, the study program and the scientific program remain the same.
The department's staff emphasizes the improvement of the didactic activity. Since 2003, under the editing of Professor V. Hotineanu, the medical-scientific medical magazine "Arta Medica" has been removed.
Since 1997, the scientific laboratory has functioned in the department, its main objective being the elaboration and implementation of some programs in the reconstructive surgery of the gastro-duodeno-pancreato-bilial area.
